Multiple Sclerosis is a progressive, degenerative condition of the central nervous system (CNS), affecting the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Its symptoms vary widely and may include:
Numbness and tingling
Vision problems and blindness
Muscle weakness or paralysis
MS is often diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, and women are two to three times more likely to be diagnosed than men. The name “multiple sclerosis” translates to “many scars,” referring to the lesions found on the brain and spinal cord.
Over 5,000 people in South Africa are currently living with MS.
Multiple Sclerosis South Africa (MSSA) is the national organisation dedicated to supporting people affected by MS. MSSA’s mission is to:
Empower individuals through accurate information
Build peer support networks
Improve access to quality care
MSSA is an Associate Member of the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation (MSIF).
This year, MSSA and the MSIF are partnering once again for The May 50K, a global virtual challenge to raise funds and awareness for MS research and better treatment access. The theme is:
“Let’s leave MS where it belongs – behind us.”
Participants are encouraged to complete 50 kilometres during May—by walking, running, or rolling. But there are many creative ways to get involved, including:
Swim 50 laps in your local pool
Play 50 minutes of padel or tennis
Read 50 pages to someone in a care home
Bake and share 50 cupcakes with children in need
Knit 50 blanket squares for a shelter
Plant 50 seeds to grow hope
Pick up 50 pieces of litter
Create 50 handmade cards and spread joy
Every action counts when done from the heart. Whether you’re moving your body or giving your time, you’re helping create a healthier world, stronger communities, and a future free from MS.
Register for The May 50K 2025 today and take action for a world without multiple sclerosis.
