International Nurses’ Day (IND) is celebrated globally every year on 12 May, marking the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing. Nurses are the backbone of the healthcare system—spending the most time with patients and acting as trusted allies to doctors.
Chosen by the International Council of Nurses (ICN), the 2025 theme builds on the 2024 theme, “The Economic Power of Care”, by focusing on nurses’ own health and wellbeing. It highlights the direct link between a healthy nursing workforce and:
Stronger economies
Better health systems
Improved community outcomes
Launching on 12 May 2025, the report will offer evidence-based solutions to support nurses, focusing on:
🧠 Mental health
💪 Physical wellness
🛡️ Workplace safety
The report aims to promote sustainable, supportive environments where nurses can thrive and continue their essential work.
Nurses are trained to see beyond immediate medical problems, considering the psychosocial and socio-economic factors affecting a patient’s wellbeing—such as poverty, unemployment, and cultural background. They act with compassion, knowledge, and resilience, making a massive impact in both healthcare and society.
“Nurses are a unique kind. They have this insatiable need to care for others, which is both their greatest strength and fatal flaw.”
— Jean Watson, American nurse theorist
On this International Nurses’ Day, we salute every nurse for their dedication, strength, and unwavering care. Your work is invaluable, and your impact is immeasurable.
Happy International Nurses’ Day!
