June is Men’s Health Month — a time to shine a light on the health issues that affect men and to encourage healthier habits and regular check-ups.
This month is all about reminding men to take care of themselves, both physically and mentally. It’s a chance to break the stigma around health conversations and empower men to seek help when needed.
Many men tend to avoid going to the doctor or speaking up about health concerns. This can lead to serious conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure going undiagnosed for too long.
Making small changes, like eating better, being more active, and quitting smoking, can have a big impact. Regular health check-ups and screening tests also go a long way in catching problems early.
Mental health often gets overlooked, especially among men. In South Africa, societal pressure to “be strong” means many men keep their emotions bottled up — leading to stress, depression, and even suicide.
Talking about how you feel is not a sign of weakness. Asking for help is one of the bravest things a man can do.
Men’s Health Month is not just for men — it’s for everyone. Take a moment to check in on your father, brother, friend, or colleague. A simple “How are you really doing?” can make a difference.
Let’s use this month to raise awareness, encourage open conversations, and support men in taking charge of their health — physically, mentally, and emotionally.
