Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month

Every September, the world recognises Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month. The goal of this month is to raise awareness about muscular dystrophy (MD), educate communities about its different forms, promote research for treatments and cures, secure funding for support services, and encourage more positive attitudes towards those living with the condition.

What is Muscular Dystrophy?

Muscular Dystrophy (MD) refers to a group of more than 70 neuromuscular disorders that cause progressive muscle weakness and wasting. Each type of MD presents differently, with varying levels of severity and complexity. Common effects include:

  • Progressive muscle weakness

  • Fatigue

  • Limited physical activity

  • Impaired balance

  • Collapsing or falls

These conditions can affect both children and adults of all races and are usually inherited, as defective genes are passed down through families. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for muscular dystrophy.

Common Types of Muscular Dystrophy

Some of the better-known types include:

  • Duchenne MD – the most common form, affecting mostly boys, while girls are often carriers of the gene.

  • Becker MD – a milder form of Duchenne.

  • Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease

  • Emery Dreifuss MD

  • Friedreich’s Ataxia

  • Facioscapulohumeral MD

  • Limb-Girdle MD

  • Myotonic Dystrophy

  • Spinal Muscular Atrophy

The Role of MDFSA

In South Africa, the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation of South Africa (MDFSA) plays a vital role in supporting families affected by MD. As a registered non-profit organisation, MDFSA has a national office and three branches that serve all nine provinces. Their work includes raising awareness, funding research, and providing support services to those living with muscular dystrophy. Donations make it possible for MDFSA to continue offering this crucial support network.

“Get into the Green Scene”

To mark Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month, MDFSA launched the “Get into the Green Scene” campaign. Green is the colour of the muscular dystrophy awareness ribbon, and the initiative invites both individuals and companies to “go green” in support of people with MD.

Ways you can participate include:

  • Wearing a green shirt, hat, or accessories

  • Using green make-up or nail polish

  • Painting your face green

  • Coming up with your own creative “green” idea

By joining in, you help raise awareness and show support for those living with muscular dystrophy.
