National Month of Deaf People

In South Africa, September is dedicated to the National Month of Deaf People – a time to celebrate the Deaf community, promote social inclusion, and raise awareness about the rights of Deaf individuals. It also highlights the importance of South African Sign Language (SASL), which is now recognised as the country’s 12th official language.

Who is Involved?
  • Deaf Federation of South Africa (DeafSA): Works to preserve, protect, and promote the civil, human, and linguistic rights of Deaf, Deafblind, Hard of hearing, and deafened people across the country.

  • South African National Deaf Association (SANDA): Provides quality services to improve public accessibility and raise awareness about issues affecting Deaf people on all levels.

  • South African Deaf Sports Federation (SADSF): The official governing body for Deaf sports in South Africa, responsible for preparing and supporting teams that have proudly represented the country at the Deaflympics since 1993.

Highlights of 2025

This year’s celebration includes:

  • A SABC 2 feature on Deaf Sports, aired on Leihlo La Sechaba (18 August 2025), showcasing the journeys and dreams of Deaf athletes aiming to compete at the Deaflympics.

  • A free in-person SASL training session in Worcester, hosted by the National Institute for the Deaf (NID), to encourage more South Africans to learn sign language.

How You Can Take Part

One of the most meaningful ways to celebrate this month is by learning some South African Sign Language. Even a few words or phrases can make a huge difference in helping a family member, neighbour, or colleague who is Deaf feel included and valued.

By taking the time to learn SASL, you’re not only bridging communication gaps but also showing respect and care for the Deaf community.
