Every August, South Africa observes Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Month—a time dedicated to educating the public about the importance of organ and tissue donation, and encouraging people to register as donors.
Organ and tissue donation has the power to change—and even save—lives. In fact, one organ donor can save up to 7 lives and enhance the lives of more than 50 others through tissue donation.
Organ donation involves transplanting organs such as the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and pancreas from one person to another.
Tissue donation includes the donation of skin, bone, corneas, and heart valves, which can restore vital functions or improve a recipient’s quality of life.
Unfortunately, South Africa faces a shortage of registered donors, largely due to a lack of public awareness.
The Organ Donor Foundation of South Africa (ODF) is a non-profit organisation working to raise awareness about life-saving organ and tissue transplants. They run public education campaigns to promote understanding and encourage people to give consent for donation.
Their main goal is to increase the number of solid organ transplants (like hearts and kidneys), as well as life-enhancing tissue transplants.
Most healthy individuals can become organ or tissue donors, as long as they are free of certain chronic illnesses that could affect recipients. There are no age limits for registering.
Becoming an organ or tissue donor is quick and easy:
Register online at www.odf.org.za or
Call the ODF toll-free on 0800 22 66 11.
You’ll receive a donor card to keep in your wallet, as well as stickers to place on your ID and driver’s license.
Most importantly, talk to your family about your decision. Your loved ones will be asked to give final consent after your death, so it’s crucial they understand and support your wishes.
Becoming a donor is an act of compassion and generosity. It costs nothing, and no payment is given to the donor or their family. In fact, it is illegal in South Africa—and many other countries—to sell or trade human organs or tissues, to prevent abuse and trafficking.
By registering as a donor, you could help give someone else a second chance at life.
Give the gift of life—register as an organ and tissue donor today.
