World Down Syndrome Day

March 21, 2025, marks International Down Syndrome Awareness Day. Each year, on both World Down Syndrome Day (March 21) and National Down Syndrome Awareness Day (October 20), Down Syndrome South Africa (DSSA) works to raise awareness about key issues affecting individuals with Down syndrome. DSSA also shares new information to educate the South African public, with the hope of creating better opportunities for the thousands of children who have long been underestimated and stigmatized.

This important day aims to challenge existing stereotypes and discrimination against people with Down syndrome, promoting a more inclusive society.

DSSA, a non-profit organization founded in 1986, serves as the national umbrella body and advocacy group for the constitutional rights of individuals with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities. The organization currently has 12 regional associations and support groups across the country. DSSA is dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with Down syndrome by advocating for their right to live independently, with dignity, security, and full participation in society.

The theme for this year is: “With Us, Not For Us.” This powerful message encourages global unity in standing alongside individuals with Down syndrome, advocating for their rights rather than making decisions on their behalf. It also aligns perfectly with South Africa’s Human Rights Day, celebrated on the same date—March 21.

How You Can Celebrate

World Down Syndrome Day is a time to recognize that individuals with Down syndrome deserve love, respect, and acceptance. Here’s how you can take part:

  • Spread Awareness – Educate those around you about Down syndrome and break misconceptions.
  • Wear Bright Socks – Colorful and mismatched socks symbolize inclusion and celebration. Whether at work or school, wearing bold socks is a fun and meaningful way to show support for the Down syndrome community.
