World Vitiligo Day, observed annually on June 25, is a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness about vitiligo—a chronic skin condition that causes the loss of pigment, resulting in white patches on the skin.
Vitiligo is a disorder where pigment-producing cells in the skin, known as melanocytes, are destroyed.
Without melanocytes, the skin loses its natural color, creating white patches that vary in size and location.
The exact cause is still unknown, but research suggests it may result from a combination of genetic, immune, and neurological factors.
Affects 1–2% of the global population.
50% of people with vitiligo experience pigment loss before the age of 20.
Around one-third of patients have a family history of vitiligo.
Though often referred to as a “disease”, it is more accurately described as a disorder—one that can have significant emotional and social impacts due to widespread misconceptions.
Two major South African organisations are working to break the stigma and support those living with vitiligo:
Beyond Vitiligo South Africa
Vitiligo Society of South Africa (VSSA)
These organisations provide:
Educational workshops
Real-life stories and community engagement
Updates on the latest treatments and therapies
Emotional support for patients and their families
While vitiligo is not curable, there are various treatments available to help restore skin pigmentation. The VSSA website offers a list of the most commonly used and effective treatment options.
