🌍 World Vitiligo Day – June 25

World Vitiligo Day, observed annually on June 25, is a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness about vitiligo—a chronic skin condition that causes the loss of pigment, resulting in white patches on the skin.

What Is Vitiligo?

  • Vitiligo is a disorder where pigment-producing cells in the skin, known as melanocytes, are destroyed.

  • Without melanocytes, the skin loses its natural color, creating white patches that vary in size and location.

  • The exact cause is still unknown, but research suggests it may result from a combination of genetic, immune, and neurological factors.

Key Facts

  • Affects 1–2% of the global population.

  • 50% of people with vitiligo experience pigment loss before the age of 20.

  • Around one-third of patients have a family history of vitiligo.

  • Though often referred to as a “disease”, it is more accurately described as a disorder—one that can have significant emotional and social impacts due to widespread misconceptions.
